As the summer just blasted by us, it’s almost time to switch out the display window, again. I just got back from getting a bunch of cool fall goodies for the windows.  I say windows because I have also been trying to update the window on the other side of the store.

After the clown fiasco it was nice to have some peace with our dock window. I think it came out great, I’m almost sad to see it go.  But the show must go on as they say….

Here is your peek at the display window and the updated “other” window. (like I didn’t have enough work to do with just the display window! LOL)

Also this summer we had a virtual tour made of our retail store. It came out awesome! And if you wait til the end, you will even get to see what I look like, if you haven’t already seen me. (No close ups please!!)

What I thought would be a quick, easy, cool looking window turned out to be anything but.  When the circus theme first popped into my head I should have known I was just asking for trouble.

The build of the clown took forever. Pieces ordered online took weeks to arrive and some parts were backordered.  It was awful!  But once everything arrived I was hoping I was back on track.  Wrong again.

I got the window all decorated with the circus tent and foil star swirls hanging from the ceiling. Then I moved in the clown, and his arm fell off, then his hand fell off. He was not cooperating at all!!  Once I got him settled, I moved in the table complete with the rabbit in the hat and the magic wand.  I ran to the back with my bag of balloons and watched videos on YouTube of how to make balloon animals. Oh my, was that a chore.  I can assure you that I will never leave and entertain at kiddie parties making balloon animals, that’s for sure.  It’s much, much harder than it looks.

Anyway, 2 hours later I had a bunch of things made, some good, some not so good.  But I filled up with window with my balloon creations.  Happy with the window, I set off to make some candles.  A few hours later I heard the loudest BANG! I thought for sure that someone had shot through the front window with a shot gun.  But alas, it was just my balloon animals popping. All that hard work and there they went, one after another, BANG, BANG, BANG until there were none.  I just know that darn clown did it!

Each day I came into the store, something else fell off the clown. He kept throwing the magic wand on the ground. He kept dropping his hands, the magic scarves kept coming off, showing his slightly sharp teeth. (hey, I tried to make him look like a happy clown doing magic) LOL  What a nightmare!! I think he lasted about 3 weeks before I couldn’t take it anymore, and switched the window to our summer theme.  Which I will post pics of very soon.

So in case you didn’t get to see the circus window with the evil clown here are some pics.

My cute little butterflies are back in the window for our May display “The Butterfly Garden”. I found some hanging vines with lights that look total cool at night.

It feels like just yesterday that I put the window up but it was actually quite a few weeks ago.  Easter was so early I just couldn’t stand looking at all those bunnies come the middle of April, so I switched the window a bit early. Here’s how it came out.

We have been hard at work getting the pieces together for the June window.  Im even trying to make balloon animals. Sadly that’s not going so well. But I have faith that I can pull it off.  Hopefully when everything is together in the window it will look good.  That’s the bad part about doing the display, you can plan all you want but you never know how its going to look until its actually all together in the window.  Im totally keeping my fingers cross for this one.

Oh and for all of you that don’t like clowns… im going to apologize now!

Easter is so early this year it kinda messed up my window timing. But luckily I was able to do a quick change and get it up so people could enjoy it before Easter arrived.  When I say “All about the Bunnies… “ I mean it! There are lots of bunnies in this window! 

There was supposed to be lots of cool painted paper mache eggs too but, let’s just say that didn’t work out as I had planned.  Being a paper mache novice, it was taking much longer then the allotted time slot, so I had to pass this year. Perhaps if I start early enough next year, I might be able to pull it off. Or perhaps my pal K-Krafty will have a go at it.

I got the plan for the rest of April/May window, it’s more of a simple window, but Im hoping it will look awesome! That gives me time to get the stuff built for the June window. Yes I said “built”, dont ask you will just have to wait and see.

Today is the first day of spring and its shaping up to be a beautiful day! Finally!
And, ok, so im finally getting around to posting the March window pics. But better late than never right?? It’s a good thing too because im getting ready to switch it out to the Easter window this weekend. It has to be a quick change because Easter is right around the corner. Then shortly after Easter I have to quick change again into the general spring window.

That will give me some time to get the June window together, since I have to build some stuff for that one. You will just have to wait and see what I come up with for that : )

It’s hard to believe that this all started out of my kitchen and that just three years ago today, we had our grand opening of the Things That Make Scents retail store. We started this journey surround by our friends and family and three years later they are still there offering their support as well as all of our new friends and extended family.  We are blessed with quite possibly the best customers in the world! Many of them started out as just a customer and over time have become the greatest of friends. We appreciate all of you and wouldn’t be where we are today without you! So THANK YOU for being part of the first 3 years with us and we look forward to many, many more!!

 I can’t help but to get a little emotional when I look back at last three years. I signed my resignation letter and then I signed my lease. It was hard to picture how the 1100sq ft space could ever be transformed into the beautiful retail store & factory it is now. Somehow we pulled it off and it was even better that we could have imagined.  It wasn’t always easy, but it was so worth the risk and we have no regrets!

 Its funny, because one main thing that sticks in my mind, is Tom asking me “Are you sure you’re not going to get sick of making candles??”  I can’t even begin to tell you how many candles I have made in the last 10 years, but I can honestly say “No, I am not sick of making candles!” Surprisingly enough it’s still very enjoyable to me. I love coming up with new scents and have fun doing it.  Talk to me when im 80 and I might have a different story though.. LOL

Thanks to the help of my good pal K-Krafty, I was able to pull off the February window, complete with not 1 but 2 giant Hershey Kisses! I am very pleased at how it turned out.  You never know whats going to happen until you start loading stuff into the window, sometimes it works and sometimes it don’t.

Now im off to think about the March window.

How could you not love snowmen?  They are one of my favorites! I have hundreds of different snowman things, from wreathes to stuffed snowmen, mugs, plates and, well you get the picture.

Thats why I knew the minute I saw these life sized snowmen at the store I just had to have them. Im pretty sure I bought 7 of them, but I think 2 ran away or melted. There were only 5 hiding out in storage when I went to get them. Whats up with that?? 

January is a tough window theme because what really does January have? NOTHING! Unless you count the freezing cold temperatures. So lucky for me and my snowman family I was able to create a winter wonderland scene for the January window display. The only thing missing is the snowflakes, which I cant seem to find anywhere. I think its possible that the 2 escapees grabbed them when they headed for the hills. But anyway, I still think it came out nice.

I tried to find some cute snowman song or something but aside from Frosty there isn’t much. I did come across a rather strange but yet interesting snowman video called Once there was a snowman.If you have 3 ½ mins check it out.

 Pretty soon I will be working on the February window. Not exactly sure how that ones going to come together just yet but I’m running out of time to think about it!

As I sit here thinking about the January window and wondering where the time went, it occurs to me that I never posted the pics of the December window.  Sorry about that.

Since Tom and I spent most of December at the store we decided to put our lovely Christmas tree from home in the display window. Complete with presents and 2 little elves.  Ok, so they aren’t real presents,  boxes are empty, but they look impressive.

I promise not to wait so long to post the January window pictures. In my head it’s a winter wonderland scene but what it will turn out to be is another story.
